Diepsloot is a relatively new shack settlement on the outskirts of Johannesburg. It is noted for its high mix of inhabitants from other African nations. There have recently been steps taken to improve infrastructure in the township in regards to the implementation of an improved waste management program "pikitup" as well as of a local shopping mall as you enter the community.

The township has recently expanded to accommodate new inhabitants forcibly evicted from their homes in Alexandra due to fears for their safety from recent flooding where their homes used to be sited too close to the riverbank.
