Marshalltown lies at the foot of the Carlton Centre, the highest building in Africa, designed by architects Skidmore Owings and Merrill. During apartheid Marshalltown and adjacent neighbourhoods were busy commercial and residential centres. Post-apartheid, much of the business migrated north to Sandton. Today many of Marshalltown’s buildings are vacant or have been occupied by the urban poor. Slum landlords, appearing to wait for gentrification, often control their lives. Will Marshalltown become a thriving village, complementing the Carlton Tower which earned Jo’burg the name the “New York of South Africa”? What will become of these photographers and their families?
